Ablaut, Stress, Internal Derivation and Law of Accent Shift on the Right in the Indo-European Languages

Krasukhin K.G.

Abstract

The article treats the mobility of Proto-Indo-European accent, its function and role in nominal derivation. Some researchers argue the existence of noun with several types of accent movement (accent-ablaut paradigms) and formulate the concept of internal derivation – i. e. the change of accent type of noun, transition in other class. Author means that there was one type of mobile accent in declension (unitary ablaut-accent-paradigm), and proposes a basic rule of derivation – the law of accent movement onto right: the position of accent is more right, the meaning of noun is more concrete.

“The Proletarian Episode” in the Literary Process of the 1920-s: the Case of Saratov

Khroustaleva A.V., Moskovskaya D.S.

Abstract

The peculiarity of Saratov literary process in the New Economy Policy Period was underlied by a small regional budget, slow speed of documentation circulation and the absence of distinct political guidance from the Party and censorship organs towards literature up to the mid-1920s, as the themes of cultural agenda were often chosen by trade unions. The regional Proletkult became a foundation for Saratov Association of Proletarian Writers (SAPW). Until the moment SAPW was supported by the central organs, it had no sufficient energy for its creative and propaganda activities, which were left to Proletkult. Getting the support, the organisation became dependent on the guiding Moscow organs. The renewal of the life of the Proletarian Association is connected with the appearance of G. Lelevich in Saratov. Together with the appearance of Lelevich in Saratov, the influence of the Proletkult weakened, and the SAPW began a flourishing period. A significant contribution to this was made by G. Lelevich.

The Phenomenon of the Character of Chekhovʼs Fiction

Afanasyev E.S.

Abstract

The topic raised in this article reflects the specificity of Chekhovʼs artistic and aesthetic system. The research literature on this topic is extensive; however, its scholarly significance is not fully appreciated due to the insufficient attention of scholars to the methodology of literary studies, which puts stock into addressing a writerʼs work as an artistic and aesthetic system considered in the context of the historical and literary process. For this reason, taking a Chekhov’s character as a single person all by himself (A.P. Chudakov, V.B. Kataev, V.Y. Linkov) has not brought clarity to the problem of the specificity of the Chekhov’s personage, its ontological and aesthetic status. We proceed from the specificity of Chekhovʼs postclassical realism, in which the artistic world is referential to the real world, and the character is a real ‘single person’, which allows us to illuminate, the above mentioned and related problems of Chekhovʼs aesthetic conception of man. In our conclusion, we summarize our observations in the form of a methodological algorithm, which would facilitate approaching and scholarly interpreting of Chekhovʼs literary texts.

The Motive of Childlessness in the Myth of the Ancestors of the Buryats

Dampilova L.S.

Abstract

On the base of the numerous variants of the myth of the origin of the ancestors of the Buryats, the author analyzes episodes concerning the motive for punishing a childless shaman (two shamanesses), and the rituals associated with receiving a child. The composition of folklore discourse reveals the semantic and semiotic specificity of variable texts. Methods of comparative, semantic-hermeneutic and semiotic analysis to identify the features of the text structure and definition of transformations of text and context at different times and in different ethnic traditions are used. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the original plot outline and characters remain unchanged in the structure of the text: the shaman as a mother, the bull as a father and the children – the first ancestors of the Buryat tribes. The motive of punishment and description of the rite for obtaining a child is present in all versions of the myth, except for the brief Selenga version. In the invariant of the motive of punishment, variants of the motive of exile, mortification, and strangulation are revealed. In different versions of the myth, recoding, transformation and refinement relate to images, motifs and mnemonic symbols. In the composition of the analyzed episodes, the author reveals the transcoding of mnemonic symbols, which are deciphered in the context of traditional stories and legends related to ritual events. From a semiotic point of view, it has been established that sparks from a flame / embers from a fire, a bone and an arrow in this case are the receptacle of the souls of future children.

Hamlet and Ludi (Commentary on Two Words in Hamlet: Quarto vs Folio)

Mikeladze N.E.

Abstract

The texts of the lifetime quartos of Shakespeareʼs Hamlet and the first posthumous folio of 1623 differ significantly. Their analysis and comparisons underlies the researchers’ assumptions and hypotheses about the “authorʼs” manuscripts, “foul papers”, prompt-books, “pirated” editions, the specifics of authorʼs vocabulary, spelling and punctuation, different kinds of emendations: typists’ errors and negligence, “authorʼs” edits, justified and unjustified interventions of editors, etc. But above all they determine our idea of Shakespeareʼs worldview, the laws of life and culture of his time, often relevant today. In modern editions two discrepancies we examined are usually reproduced not from the good quarto of 1604 (Q2, left), but according to the First folio version (F1, right): sanctity – sanitie (II, 2, 207); gamgiuing – gain-giuing (V, 2, 194). Russian translations are also made from it.

A comparative study of the text and the context of these passages led us to the following conclusions. In both cases preference should be given to the “true and perfect” text of the Second quarto (Q2) and proceed from it in reprints and new translations of Hamlet. In scholarly editions of the play both places need detailed commentary, which is important for Shakespearean studies. Gamgiuing requires a correction to gaming with justification of the probable cause of the typo. Both words explain the development of the complex motive of game and gaming in the play, and specifically Hamlet’s attitude towards the game: his penchant for wise play with words and meanings, considered as “madness” by “carnal” men (1Cor 2: 12–15), and his rejection of gambling in the logic of Roger Ascham’s treatise Toxophilus (1545).

Russian Association of Proletarian Writers: Materials for the History of the Literary Organization

Bystrova O.V.

Abstract

The article analyzes archival materials on the history of the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers (RAPP), representing it from its origins in the form of the Section of Proletarian Writers at the LITO of the NCP of the RSFSR and the All-Russian Union of Proletarian Writers to the All-Russian / The All-Union Association of Proletarian Writers (VAPP) and the final organizational design as a RAPP at the First All-Union Congress of Proletarian Writers (1928). The internal processes of the formation of the APP are presented: organizational dissociation from the MAPP, the struggle against the Napost minority, the “Literary Front”. Archival data on the liquidation of the RAPP allow us to conclude that the Organizing Committee of the USSR Writersʼ Union could not do without the experience and accumulated literary practices of the RAPP in its further activities. The history of the Proletarian Writersʼ Association studied in the article is based on the statutory documents, transcripts of meetings, resolutions, memos of this institution, which are an important source for a general understanding of the domestic post-revolutionary literary process. They also serve as a source of data on the creative biographies of writers of the 1920s and 1930s.

Syntactic Opposition for Nouns and Verbs as an Argument of a Clause in Late Classical Chinese Text Lunheng I A. D.

Durymanova A.D.

Abstract

This article analyzes the syntactic features of presumably nominal and verbal lexemes in argument positions based on the material of a late classical text of the 1st century AD. “Lunheng”. The main proposed tool for syntactic analysis is a system of distinctive contexts (allow to determine the syntactic position of the lexeme under study). Such acriteriahelped to parse and analyze more than twenty-five thousand clauses. It appeared that there is a great frequency difference in the number of verb and noun lexemes encountered in given argument contexts (69.48% and 87.84%, respectively), there are also other differences in contexts’ frequency, conditions and restrictions of use. Potentially, these results may highlight some restrictions of free syntactic shift, and as a result indirectly indicate rigid flexibility of the system of categories in Old Chinese with a number of limitations.

The First Steps Towards “All-Human Brotherhood”: An Episode from the History of Foreign Literature Publishing in Soviet Russia (1917–1922)

Tsyganov D.M.

Abstract

The article traces the history of foreign literature publishing in the first post-revolutionary five-year period (1917–1922) – from Lenin’s Decree on the Press, which initiated Soviet book publishing, to the book exhibition in Florence, which summarised the interim results of the early Soviet book publishing policy. The institutionalisation of the publishing industry in those years went hand in hand with the process of overcoming the reputational crisis resulting from the revolutionary events. One of the main tasks in the conditions of redefining the political orientations of Soviet Russia was the search for international “allies”. Therefore, the publication of foreign literature was included not only in the cultural context, but also in the diplomatic context. The young regime could not control the production of foreign literature, unlike the production of Soviet literature, although it tried tirelessly (sometimes not unsuccessfully) to influence creative practice beyond its control. This inability to restructure literary life beyond the borders of the USSR became an important reason to change the strategy of interaction with it. The aesthetic policy used all available means to form in the “mass” reader an alternative, detached from reality idea of the structure of the “global” literary process and the balance of power on the world cultural map of the first half of the twentieth century. The result of the authorities’ work in this direction was a fairly rapid penetration of Soviet books into the pan-European cultural environment. The article is based on numerous materials on the history of early Soviet book publishing and book statistics, and is accompanied by an appendix containing a bibliographic list of all foreign literature books (published in Gosizdat and World Literature) presented at the Florence Book Fair of 1922.

Principles and Methods of Digital Lexicography

Makarov Y.Y.

Abstract

The article describes the principles and methods of digital lexicography. It begins by defining the four main stages of the lexicographic process: 1) writing up the dictionary, 2) editing and developing the book layout, 3) publishing, and 4) the post-publication period. The following section focuses on stage 1, comparing the compilation of example corpora for dictionary preparation in the past (using millions of cardboard cards) with modern tools for lexical analysis provided by web corpora like the Russian National Corpus (ruscorpora.ru). The overview of the advancements in finding examples illustrating word usage is followed by an exploration of the ways dictionary writing methods have evolved.

The analysis of computer-based dictionary writing methods starts with a discussion of the two most popular approaches: file-based and tabular. The former involves composing dictionary files with thousands of entries using text editors like Microsoft Word, resulting in poorly structured entries with inconsistent markup. The latter, however, represents each entry as a raw with entry zones (forms, meanings, examples, etc.) arranged in separate columns. The section outlines the challenges of these methods, emphasizing their limitations in publishing options and handling complex linguistic data, often employing many-to-one relationships. Alternatives such as Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) formats and database utilization are discussed, highlighting their capacity for structured data representation.

Subsequently, dictionary writing systems (DWS) are introduced, with the OnLex platform serving as a primary example illustrating their functionality. It demonstrates how online editing interfaces streamline lexicographic processes, from data input to publication and feedback collection. By analyzing DWS features, the article emphasizes their efficacy in simplifying the editorial workflow and enhancing user experience.

A critical appraisal of the advantages of online DWS is provided, highlighting their role in addressing key challenges faced by traditional publishing methods. Notable advantages include seamless integration of search functionalities, support for multiple languages, and real-time error reporting mechanisms after publication.

In conclusion, the article advocates for the wider adoption of digital lexicography methods, particularly within the Russian tradition, emphasizing their potential to facilitate every stage of the dictionary creation process.

Folklore and Mythological Motifs and Images in the Lyrical Poetry by Viktor Rydberg

Surkov V.V.

Abstract

The article devoted to the folklore and mythological motifs and images in the poetry by Viktor Rydberg (1828–1895). The influence of the Romantic tradition traces in his literary style. The Romantic authors of the early 19th century specifically turned to the national folklore and scandinavian mythology, and Rydberg comes after them. But Romanticists tend to stilization of folksongs, and folklore and mythologicalmaterial is inherently valued for them. This feature is not inherent to the post-Romantic poetry. The analysis of poems by Rydberg revealed that using folklore and mythological images and motifs as metapohors and allegories is a specifics of the style of his poetry. The author expresses his feelings about social and phylosophical promlems of the century through them.

The Textology of I. A. Bunin’s Short Story “Silence”: Elegy in Prose

Shchavlinskiy M.S.

Abstract

In 1901, after returning from his first trip abroad, I.A. Bunin wrote a short story based on a trip to Switzerland in the company of V.P. Kurovsky, “On Lake Geneva” (later “Silence”). This text is the only prose work of the writer that contains a dedication. The figure of Kurovsky (a romantic character) fascinated the young Bunin, and he later dedicated poetry to him.

The article shows through a textual prism how the writer’s elegiac story was transformed from edition to edition (the text was reprinted 7 times). Bunin retained the original principles of the poetics of romanticism, but diligently retouched the excessive emotionality of the text, got rid of romantic clichés, reduced the amount of intertextual connections, and also carried out the stylistic text editing characteristic of the mature Bunin of the mid-1910s.

Contradictions within the Moscow Linguistic Circle in 1922–1923 and the Reasons for its Disintegration (according to the Materials of the MLC Stored at the V. V. Vinogradov Russian Language Institute of the RAS)

Barankova G.S.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the last period of activity of the Moscow Linguistic Circle (1922–1923). Issues related to the termination of the work of the Circle are being considered. The article is based on archival materials stored at the Russian Language Institute. V.V. Vinogradov of the RAS. Among the reasons that contributed to the liquidation of the Circle were scientific, methodological, organizational and financial problems. Two opposing groups of members of the Circle were identified, the differences between which characterized different theoretical approaches to linguistic research. The first group consisted of supporters of G. Shpetʼs philosophy of language. They attached great importance to the study of semantics and the internal form of the word. The second group defended a formalistic approach to language, showed interest in phonetics, experimental studies of language, and began the development of phonology. There was no agreement on the issues of publishing the works of members of the Moscow Linguistic Circle in series. As a result of these contradictions, by 1924 the Circle ended its existence.
